Crustacean
Crustacean features three sections manually mixed to a single 1/4 inch output. The following descriptors are presented in reference to the location of the standard rotary controls.
- Upper left adjusts volume of "AIR", the section that produces white noise.
- Lower left adjusts volume of "DIRT", the stage that produces a rumble derived from pushing white noise through fixed low pass filters and gain stages.
- Upper right adjusts volume of "FIRE", a section that produces a variable crackle.
- Lower right adjusts the flow rate of "FUEL" (which feeds "FIRE"), the intensity of crackle density that ranges from the delicate pops one tends to associate with lightly dusted vinyl pressings to a crushing harsh noise wall.
In addition to the rotary controls described above, an ON/OFF toggle, LED power indication, and a normal level/boosted level switch round out the standard feature-set.
The Crustacean is built into a hand fabricated shell of mild steel, and typically finished with an induced patina (rust) followed up with a
spray applied clear coat of oil based polyurethane. Rough enclosure dimensions are typically 4x6x1.5 inches, or (roughly) 10x15x4 centimeters, not accounting for knob height or connector fittings.
Unit operates on 9 volt center negative power supply (not included). Power inlet is diode protected and use of clean power is recommended as
due to single ended class A operation at all of the initial noise source stages, spurious signal on the power supply can be introduced into the
signal and interfere with the nuanced qualities of generated noise.
