Tetanus Booster makes louder.
The Tetanus Booster is based on discrete transistor topology. Comprised largely of a single transistor initial gain stage which feeds a direct coupled BJT pair, the Tetanus Booster offers a number of features as described in reference to the location of the following controls. Please note that legacy builds have enjoyed numerous forms, and if you have an older unit that does not resemble the pictures, the orientation or existence of switches or even dual controls may differ from the following.
- Left knob defines input gain. The gain control ranges from no/low signal boost at full counter-clockwise to substantial signal boost at full clockwise.
- Right knob is an output volume control. The volume control ranges from no output signal at full counter-clockwise to substantial output signal at full clockwise.
- Left switch actuates the gain mode. Standard "low" gain is engaged in bat "down", while bat "up" initiates the "high" gain mode, which can reach into distortion/fuzz territory.
- Right switch is a top boost, with bat "up" elevating higher frequencies and bat "down" maintaining the darker characteristics of the circuit.
Tetanus Booster is built into a 3.5x5.5x1 inch, or (roughly) 9x14x3 hand bent enclosure of mild steel, that is cast into a patina inducement process that generally results in patterns of rust. Baseplate is typically friction fit and may be unsuitable for use with velcro on a pedalboard without installation of screws in the sidewall. Please let me know if such screws are preferred, as I generally leave them off for aesthetic reasons.
Features & peculiarities:
- Polarity inverts between input and output.
- Secondary (inner) output goes silent in bypass.
- Undistorted outputs of roughly five volt peak to peak magnitude have been observed on units powered by standard 9 volt rail.
- All builds are diode protected, so plugging into dirty power is harmless.
- This is a single rail discrete transistor design, CMRR is non-existent, so unless you like the particular note that a poorly filtered or malfunctioning power supply produces it is advisable to plug them into clean power.
- The operational regions allowed by control travel will extend into the realm of self oscillation, especially if both HIGH GAIN and TOP BOOST are actuated.
